Ancient Taras Dolphin Coin Pendent
Ancient Taras Dolphin Coin Pendent
About the Piece
A silver didrachm coin minted in Taras, Greek Italy circa 272-235 BC in sharp, well preserved condition set in an 18k gold. On the obverse, a young nude, Taras is shown riding a dolphin with a trident in hand while Nike flys overhead. On the reverse, a warrior on horseback is shown with shield and spear.
In Greek mythology, Taras is the son of the sea god Poseidon. As a youth, Taras was saved from shipwreck by a dolphin which was sent to him by his father. Taras rode the dolphin safely to shore, landing in an area that is now the south of Italy. As Pausanias wrote, he founded the city Taranth there, where he made landfall, to honor his rescue and named the area after himself.
