About the Artist:

Tom Haney cherishes tradition and the old way of doing things, much of his work a reaction to the throwaway society of today. By collecting found objects, as an archivist or archaeologist would, discarded, obsolete artifacts, and interweaving them with his wood carved figures, he creates his art pieces, often drawing on the old-world tradition of automata to tell his dynamic stories through the object’s mechanical movement. His stories illustrate humankind's perseverance to overcome life’s obstacles, often with open-ended narratives that are completed by the viewer. Born in Cincinnati in 1962, Tom Haney has always been fascinated by mechanical movement. Once at the age of 2, he became separated from his family in a museum while being transfixed by a mechanical diorama. In subsequent years, his fascination would manifest itself often - he regularly took apart household items, much to his parents' disapproval. He took art classes in high school and obtained a degree in Industrial Design from University of Cincinnati. Before becoming a full-time artist in 2000, his professional work consisted of making props, models, and miniatures for television commercials, still photographers, and motion pictures. His latest show was "Inside the Perimeter" at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) Terminal "E” in 2018.
