About the Piece
This is a cast marble sculpture depicting a bride with a floral wreath around her head and the draping fabric of a light veil over her face. The piece measures 14" tall and 7" across. Sculptures of veiled figures like this reached their hight of popularity in Italy during the 1700's, as masters of marble sculpting showed off their cultivated techniques. 100 years later, artists like Raffaelo Monti revived the technically demanding tradition of pairing highly polished marble with that which was more textured to create the illusion of lightweight fabric with lifelike realism in solid stone.
