Meyers 1906 Antiquarian Cut Book
Meyers 1906 Antiquarian Cut Book
About the Piece
One of a kind piece measuring 9.75" tall, 7" across and 2.5" deep.
This antique encyclopedia has been altered to tell a story, one of red and brown toned birds, marsupials and plants with representations of aboriginal peoples interwoven with black and white images of maps and microscopic scientific slides. The copy pages of the book have been methodically and cleanly cut away to reveal the images as they were originally printed, still attached to the binding. The book sculpture has a hanger attached to the back and a plexiglass pane that slides in behind the book cover to protect the inside from dust and damage when on display in your environment. The fore edge of the text block has been coated with a hard lacquer so that the book remains closed. This piece is signed and dated by the artist.
About the Artist
"The use of antiquarian books makes the work at the same time an exploration and a deconstruction of nostalgia. We create our own past from fragments of reality in a process that combines the willful aspects of remembering and forgetting with the coincidental and unconscious."
