Pall Mall Magazine 1893 Antiquarian Cut Book
Pall Mall Magazine 1893 Antiquarian Cut Book
About the Piece
One of a kind piece measuring 10" tall, 7.5" across and 3" deep.
This antique book has been altered to tell a story, one of romantic depictions of people from all walks of life. Black and white illustrations are interspersed with softly colored images. The pages of this book here account for images that appeared throughout the year 1893. The Pall Mall Magazine with a monthly literary publication started in 1893 which featured poetry, fiction, short story, commentary and extensive artwork. It published the work of many of the most significant artists of the time, including George Marrow, Rudyard Kipling and Jack London. The copy pages of the book have been methodically and cleanly cut away to reveal the images as they were originally printed, still attached to the binding. The book sculpture has a hanger attached to the back and a plexiglass pane that slides in behind the book cover to protect the inside from dust and damage when on display in your environment. The fore edge of the text block has been coated with a hard lacquer so that the book remains closed. This piece is signed and dated by the artist.
About the Artist
"The use of antiquarian books makes the work at the same time an exploration and a deconstruction of nostalgia. We create our own past from fragments of reality in a process that combines the willful aspects of remembering and forgetting with the coincidental and unconscious."
